Parent Information

Information for Parents and Carers

Parents and carers play a vital role in helping young people make decisions about their future. Research consistently shows that family members are often the first people young people turn to when seeking advice about careers, education and training options.

At our school, we provide a comprehensive careers programme that helps students explore their strengths, interests and future pathways. We also direct students to a range of high-quality careers resources and guidance services. However, the support and encouragement provided at home can make a significant difference in helping young people feel confident about their choices.

How You Can Support Your Child

Every young person is different. Some may already have clear career ambitions, while others may need more time to explore their options. You can support your child by:

  • Encouraging regular conversations about their future aspirations.
  • Focusing on the skills, qualities and behaviours needed for success rather than concentrating solely on specific job roles.
  • Discussing what they enjoy and what motivates them.
  • Keeping an open mind about different career pathways.
  • Asking about careers-related activities they have participated in at school.
  • Being patient, as interests and ambitions often change over time.
  • Remembering that the final decision about their future belongs to them.

We have put together a resource that you can use that explains all the Post-16 pathways and courses to help and support you with these conversations.

Five Ways to Start a Careers Conversation

  1. Explore Their Interests and Strengths

Talk together about:

  • Their favourite subjects.
  • Activities they enjoy inside and outside school.
  • Their personal strengths and talents.
  • Their values and what is important to them in life and work.
  1. Encourage Skills Reflection

Help your child identify the skills they are developing both in school and through hobbies, volunteering, sports or other activities.

  1. Research Career Options Together

Use careers websites and online tools to investigate a range of occupations, qualifications and progression routes.

  1. Share Your Own Experiences

Discuss your own education, work experiences and career journey. Hearing real-life examples can help young people understand the variety of opportunities available.

  1. Keep the Conversation Going

Career planning is a process rather than a one-off decision. Regular discussions can help your child stay informed and confident as they move through different stages of education and training.
